Servants of God
Takashi and Midori Nagai
The first thing I think, every morning, as soon as I wake up, is that I am happy. Even today I am alive. Even today I have work to do. Even though I am only able to use my hands and head, I find myself filled with enthusiasm as if I were a schoolboy in the morning ready to go on a field trip.
- Takashi Nagai, Thoughts from the Nyokodō
Takashi Nagai (1908-1951) is a medical radiologist. Meeting and marrying Midori Marina Moriyama (1908-1945), led him to the Catholic faith. He survives the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, which takes away his wife and all his possessions, along with much of the city.
It is for him a new beginning in search of That which never dies; a journey to discover the faith from which hope and life are reborn. From this vision of his begins the moral and material reconstruction of the city. Seventy years later, the story of the Nagai couple changes the lives of those of us who come across their story.
