The history of Christianity in Japan is as precious and moving as it is unknown to most. After a brief period of flourishing following the arrival of European missionaries in the 16th century, Christians faced a series of brutal persecutions that led to tens of thousands of martyrs, leaving only a small group of believers to pass on the faith in secret for over two hundred and fifty years. The final great trial came in 1945, when the atomic bomb was dropped precisely on the Christian district of Nagasaki.
